Every student has some skill, interest, experience, or characteristic that may make them an attractive candidate for one scholarship or another. And while we often refer to scholarships as “free money,” scholarships don’t actually come for free. It takes work to thoughtfully consider your strengths and research the scholarships that might be most appropriate for you. While the effort that goes into finding and winning scholarships may be akin to a part-time job, we at College Coach want to make your job a little easier. This on-going scholarship series highlights a new scholarship each week. Check out the below, along with the other posts in the series, and you may discover a funding resource that will make covering that college bill a little (or a lot!) easier. The costs associated with caring for a loved one who has been diagnosed with ALS place a real financial hardship on a family. This renewable scholarship opportunity acknowledges that hardship and offers financial assistance to college students who are affected by ALS. Scholarship: The Paula Kovarick Segalman Family Scholarship Awarding Organization: ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter Amount: Up to $25,000 Number of Scholarships Awarded: One Eligible Students: Students must be legal residents of Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia and have a parent or legal guardian who has been diagnosed with ALS or has passed away from ALS. They must attend or be accepted to full-time study at a community college or four-year college and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Also, students must have a household income of less than $50,000 annually. How to Apply: Complete the online application, submit an official transcript, and provide two letters of reference (both academic and personal). Additionally, the application requires a 500-word personal statement on how ALS has impacted the applicant.
