There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school!
School Spotlight: Rhodes College
The 2,000 students at Rhodes College are lucky to have the best of both worlds: a beautiful, wooded campus with easy access to a major metropolis and the Home of the Blues, Memphis. As one of the Colleges That Change Lives, Rhodes provides a tremendous variety of hands-on opportunities for experiential learning. Eighty percent of students participate in some form of community service, 75 percent complete an internship, and 65 percent study off campus. The College offers over 40 majors in a range of liberal arts and science disciplines, including biochemistry & molecular biology, music, and urban studies. Music is popular on campus, and students can get involved through a variety of performance groups and ensembles. Next year, perhaps you’ll find yourself in the Women’s Chorus, the Rhodes College Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, or the World Drum Ensemble. While Rhodes students are diverse (over 70 percent hail from out-of-state, and approximately 30 percent are multicultural or international), it’s interesting to note that about 50 percent of students join a Greek organization. Fun fact: each semester during exams period, faculty and staff volunteer to make blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes for students needing a snack and study break!
