Choosing The Right College School Spotlight: Kalamazoo College Written by Elyse Krantzon April 11th, 2017 I became interested in the college admissions process after serving as a student tour guide in the admissions office of my alma mater. After graduating, I accepted an admissions counseling position at Bennington College in Vermont where I evaluated applications and reviewed art portfolios from students across the country. Three years later, after pursuing my master's degree in New York City, I joined the admissions staff at Barnard College where I served as a senior admissions officer. At Barnard, I directed Long Island and Boston recruitment in addition to managing the College's alumnae interview program, coordinating admissions statistics, and editing various college publications. Having also served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College and visited over 75 colleges, I feel especially well-equipped to help students prepare for admission interviews and campus tours. School Spotlight: Kalamazoo College Kalamazoo, MI While the name may conjure up images of a Dr. Seuss tale, Kalamazoo isn’t a fictitious locale. Situated in the southwest corner of Michigan, the city of Kalamazoo is home to one of the Colleges that Change Lives: Kalamazoo College. At K, a liberal arts and sciences education isn’t simply handed to each of the 1,450 undergraduates enrolled here. Instead, the innovative K-Plan ensures that all students have the opportunity to engage with a flexible curriculum that can be tailored to students’ unique passions. At the center of the K-Plan are internships, cultural exploration, and independent scholarship. A modern-day apprenticeship program places freshmen and sophomores with K alumni, enabling them to gain hands-on experiences in a profession of their choice. Further afield, an amazing 80 percent of students partake in an international experience, whether it be studying in Ecuador, France, Thailand, or beyond. And all students complete a senior project in the form of a thesis, performance, or exhibit. Perhaps that’s one reason why so many K graduates go on to earn PhDs, especially in the fields of chemistry and foreign languages. Fun fact: Kalamazoo ranks 13 among small colleges in the number of volunteers it sends to the Peace Corps!
