I became interested in the college admissions process after serving as a student tour guide in the admissions office of my alma mater. After graduating, I accepted an admissions counseling position at Bennington College in Vermont where I evaluated applications and reviewed art portfolios from students across the country. Three years later, after pursuing my master's degree in New York City, I joined the admissions staff at Barnard College where I served as a senior admissions officer. At Barnard, I directed Long Island and Boston recruitment in addition to managing the College's alumnae interview program, coordinating admissions statistics, and editing various college publications. Having also served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College and visited over 75 colleges, I feel especially well-equipped to help students prepare for admission interviews and campus tours.

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school! School Spotlight: Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago, IL For students who live and breathe science, technology, engineering, or math, and long to be surrounded by classmates and professors who are as equally passionate about the same, look no further than the Illinois Institute of Technology. IIT’s 2,800 undergrads can choose from six academic divisions (such as science, human science, and applied technology) and 36 majors, including popular programs in architecture, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science. A brand new major, bioanalytical chemistry, is the first bachelor’s program of its kind available in the US! Given that IIT is a Ph.D. granting institution (with more grad students than undergrads), opportunities for student research are outstanding. Professors’ interests range from macromolecular crystallography to statistical modeling of psychopathology, and the school’s 30 research centers and institutes nearly guarantee that undergrads will find a mentor in their area of interest. Although technology permeates all aspects of academic life, students here still know how to have fun. Active students can turn to 16 D3 varsity sports or more than 150 clubs and organizations, including Greek life and a cappella. Fun fact: IIT’s 120-acre campus, which located just three miles from downtown Chicago, is incredibly diverse; international students and students of color each comprise approximately 25% of the student body.
