Choosing The Right College School Spotlight: Claremont McKenna College Written by Elyse Krantzon January 1st, 2019 I became interested in the college admissions process after serving as a student tour guide in the admissions office of my alma mater. After graduating, I accepted an admissions counseling position at Bennington College in Vermont where I evaluated applications and reviewed art portfolios from students across the country. Three years later, after pursuing my master's degree in New York City, I joined the admissions staff at Barnard College where I served as a senior admissions officer. At Barnard, I directed Long Island and Boston recruitment in addition to managing the College's alumnae interview program, coordinating admissions statistics, and editing various college publications. Having also served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College and visited over 75 colleges, I feel especially well-equipped to help students prepare for admission interviews and campus tours. School Spotlight: Claremont McKenna College Claremont, CA Claremont McKenna College accomplishes what few liberal arts colleges even attempt. By offering a liberal arts education that specializes in economics and political science, CMC prepares students to enter careers in business, government, and other leadership professions. That’s why you’ll find such unique majors as economics & engineering; environment, economics & politics; and science management. Even faculty research interests embrace this notion of responsible citizenship. Approximately 75 percent of students conduct research with faculty on topics as diverse as human rights, entrepreneurship, and political philosophy & freedom. Every Monday through Thursday, guest speakers enlighten students through talks and/or performances at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. This past fall, students heard from George Will (journalist and political commentator), Rebecca Erbelding (curator at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum) and Chaun Webster (poet and graphic designer). Forty-five percent of CMC’s 1,300 undergraduates study abroad, while nearly one-third of students graduate with a dual or double major. CMC even coordinates Sponsored Internships & Experiences, making it that much easier for first and second year students to land funded 4-12 week summer internships. Admissions tip: on-campus interviews are available for juniors beginning May 1st. You can schedule them at https://connect.cmc.edu/interview!
