There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school!
School Spotlight: Brandeis University
What do Smart Balance buttery spread and actress Debra Messing have in common? They both got their start at Brandeis University. Located 30 minutes from Boston, this nonsectarian, private research university with a distinctly undergraduate focus has strong ties to the American Jewish community. Nearly all of the world’s major religions are represented at Brandeis and the campus features Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant religious spaces, in addition to a Muslim prayer room. Brandeis’s student body of just over 3,600 is diverse in more ways than one. Over 70 percent of domestic students hail from out-of-state, 20 percent of undergraduates are international citizens, and 29 percent identify as students of color. Popular majors include economics, biology, and business, and the university also offers the unique interdisciplinary major Health: Science, Society and Policy. Between the Rose Art Museum and the Brandeis Theatre Company, the arts play a major role in campus life. The university even sponsors a concert series especially for Brandeis students to showcase their new and original musical works.
