Binghamton University

I became interested in the college admissions process after serving as a student tour guide in the admissions office of my alma mater. After graduating, I accepted an admissions counseling position at Bennington College in Vermont where I evaluated applications and reviewed art portfolios from students across the country. Three years later, after pursuing my master's degree in New York City, I joined the admissions staff at Barnard College where I served as a senior admissions officer. At Barnard, I directed Long Island and Boston recruitment in addition to managing the College's alumnae interview program, coordinating admissions statistics, and editing various college publications. Having also served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College and visited over 75 colleges, I feel especially well-equipped to help students prepare for admission interviews and campus tours.

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school! School Spotlight: Binghamton University Binghamton, NY As the premier public research university in New York State, Binghamton University offers outstanding pre-professional programs in business, nursing, and engineering, while also providing students a strong foundation in the liberal arts. Nearly 14,000 undergrads are enrolled at Binghamton, with the majority of those studying in the Harpur College of Arts & Sciences. Among the many majors available at Harpur include Integrative Neuroscience, Environmental Studies, and Philosophy, Politics, & Law, an ideal interdisciplinary option for students seeking careers in business or law. On the other side of campus, the School of Engineering and Applied Science houses one of the fastest growing engineering program in the country. The common first-year program is a fantastic feature of the engineering school, as this provides students the opportunity to explore a range of engineering disciplines before declaring their major at the end of the freshman year. Binghamton welcomed the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to its campus in the fall of 2017, an exciting resource for pre-pharmacy students. First year students interested in developing leadership skills may want to consider the Emerging Leaders Program. Working in a small team with other freshmen, students design and execute a service learning project to benefit the local community. Fun fact: 20 percent of students stay on after graduation to earn a master’s degree at Binghamton. Photo Credit: Top, Courtesy of Binghamton University College-Visit-CTA
