Choosing The Right College School Spotlight: Allegheny College Written by Emily Toffelmireon September 28th, 2020 I came to College Coach after working for many years in college admissions and high school counseling. As a school counselor, I assisted students in the college application process and wrote hundreds of letters of recommendation, while also helping them and their families cope with any emotional, social, and academic concerns throughout the year. I transitioned from the high school setting to the admissions office when I joined the University of Southern California as an assistant director, reading freshmen and transfer applications and collaborating on admission decisions for over 150 majors, including the liberal arts, engineering, business, cinema, and the fine and performing arts. I subsequently took on the role of senior assistant director in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, where I coordinated the division's Mork, Stamps, Trustee, Presidential and Dean's merit scholarship selection process, as well as recruitment publications and outreach, and traveled everywhere from Honolulu to Miami presenting to and interviewing hundreds of applicants each year. School Spotlight: Allegheny College Meadville, PA There are dozens of strong liberal arts colleges in Pennsylvania. What makes Allegheny College stand out? Practically everything! From its diverse student body to its emphasis on “unusual academic combinations,” Allegheny prepares its 1,800 students to reach their personal and professional goals, whatever they happen to be. In addition to requiring that all students complete a senior project, everyone here earns both a major and a minor, ensuring that students explore a range of fields that can complement each other in fascinating ways. Interested in music and mathematics, or computer science and Chinese? You can study that at Allegheny. While students at this gorgeous campus take their academics seriously, they also love to play. Between varsity, club, and intramural sports, a large portion of the college’s students are involved in athletics. Amazingly, the Gators have earned at least one conference championship since they joined the North Coast Athletic Conference in 1984! Fun fact: Allegheny is the #2 college in the country when it comes to producing eventual PhD students. That means Allegheny students are extremely likely to go on to graduate school, so this is a campus to take seriously if you have PhD aspirations!
