There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges, including this week’s School Spotlight, Marlboro College. Filling a unique niche in higher education, Marlboro College is home to approximately 175 undergraduates from across the country. Each of these independent thinkers is charged with the hefty responsibility of charting their own educational journeys and contributing as vocal members to the college’s self-governing community. Courses here are kept intentionally small, with an average of 8 students per class, ensuring that these discussion-based classes are highly interactive. And where else can you study topics like “Sustainable Solutions to Regional Environmental Concerns,” “How Poems Get Made,” and “Plants of Vermont”? Despite Marlboro’s non-traditional vibe, the College offers a host of social and academic opportunities found at other liberal arts colleges. Aspiring writers can take part in the school newspaper or literary magazine, while musically-inclined students can join the college’s jazz ensemble or madrigal choir. One of the Marlboro’s most innovative academic offerings is the World Studies Program, which includes a 6-8 month internship in a foreign country and graduate coursework offered through the nearby School for International Training. A haven for creative and passionate learners in southeastern VT, Marlboro is also one of the 45 Colleges that Change Lives.
