UC San Diego

I became interested in the college admissions process after serving as a student tour guide in the admissions office of my alma mater. After graduating, I accepted an admissions counseling position at Bennington College in Vermont where I evaluated applications and reviewed art portfolios from students across the country. Three years later, after pursuing my master's degree in New York City, I joined the admissions staff at Barnard College where I served as a senior admissions officer. At Barnard, I directed Long Island and Boston recruitment in addition to managing the College's alumnae interview program, coordinating admissions statistics, and editing various college publications. Having also served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College and visited over 75 colleges, I feel especially well-equipped to help students prepare for admission interviews and campus tours.

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school! School Spotlight: University of California San Diego La Jolla, CA Student-centered, research-focused, and service-oriented: that’s UC San Diego in a nutshell. And thanks to the dizzying array of research opportunities and access to nationally renowned faculty, it’s easy for UC San Diego’s 25,600 undergraduates to learn the skills they need to positively impact the world around them. The social science, engineering, and biology programs are among the school’s most popular. But what really makes UC San Diego unique is its residential college system. By dividing the incoming freshmen class into six specific neighborhoods, students have the opportunity to form close and meaningful relationships with other members of their community. The undergraduate colleges enroll between 4,000 and 5,000 students, and each features their own dorms, general education requirements, and traditions. One college focuses on environmental issues and sustainability, while another emphasizes diversity and civic engagement. No matter which college you choose, you’ll still have access to the University’s 140 plus majors and 500 clubs and student organizations. Fun fact: among the current faculty, you’ll find recipients of the following prestigious honors: National Medal of Science (nearly 500), Nobel Prize (3), Pulitzer Prize (1), Presidential Medal of Freedom (1), and Fields Medal (1).
