Choosing The Right College School Spotlight: Boston College Written by Emily Toffelmireon September 15th, 2020 I came to College Coach after working for many years in college admissions and high school counseling. As a school counselor, I assisted students in the college application process and wrote hundreds of letters of recommendation, while also helping them and their families cope with any emotional, social, and academic concerns throughout the year. I transitioned from the high school setting to the admissions office when I joined the University of Southern California as an assistant director, reading freshmen and transfer applications and collaborating on admission decisions for over 150 majors, including the liberal arts, engineering, business, cinema, and the fine and performing arts. I subsequently took on the role of senior assistant director in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, where I coordinated the division's Mork, Stamps, Trustee, Presidential and Dean's merit scholarship selection process, as well as recruitment publications and outreach, and traveled everywhere from Honolulu to Miami presenting to and interviewing hundreds of applicants each year. School Spotlight: Boston College Chestnut Hill, MA In the past several years, Boston College’s popularity has simply skyrocketed. And it’s no wonder. The college is located six miles from Boston, features 31 DI athletic teams (including highly decorated ice hockey and sailing teams), and offers top-notch academic programs in everything from business to nursing. And did you know that BC students can take advantage of multiple dual degree programs in fields such as linguistics, psychology, and special education, allowing highly motivated students to earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees within five years? Over 20 percent of the college’s 9,700 undergraduates are enrolled in the Carroll School of Management, which combines elements of business and liberal arts in its curriculum. In addition to receiving support from the college’s main Career Center, business students have the added benefit of working with a dedicated Carroll School career services professional to discuss interview skills, résumé tips, and networking dos and don’ts. Although the majority of students identify as Catholic, the college is diverse, with students coming from 49 states (they need more North Dakotans!) and 65 countries. Additionally, 34 percent of undergraduates are students of color.
