My admissions career started at Harvey Mudd College (HMC) where I recruited and read applications from students applying from southern California and the Southwest. In addition to making admissions decisions, I also coordinated social media for the Office of Undergraduate Admission, overseeing a team of students who created content highlighting HMC’s unique blend of STEM and the liberal arts.
Most recently, I worked for Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), evaluating first year applicants interested in a range of STEM majors from engineering and computer science as well as interdisciplinary majors like computational biology. I’ve also reviewed applications for the highly selective Summer Science Program, a rigorous residential summer research experience, and for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarships.
Students applying to STEM majors tend to highlight technical skills and accomplishments in their college applications. Our STEM admissions expert explains why these students should consider also highlighting soft skills valued not just by admissions officers, but future employers.
