After your child has deposited at the college of their choice, the pressure of meeting college costs all of a sudden becomes very real. That first college bill is usually sent out in July with a due date in August. What takes many parents by surprise is that the bills are sent directly to the student, either via snail mail or, much more commonly, via an electronic notification, either to the student’s new college email address, or to their student account portal, which typically requires the student to log in and retrieve their billing statement.

Congratulations on your child’s college acceptances! Their hard work has paid off and now the decision as to which college is best for them needs to be made. I always encourage parents and their child to step back for a moment. Don’t worry about choosing that one perfect college, as there are likely many colleges that fit your child’s needs and would ultimately provide a rich college experience. College is what a student makes of it, and what they accomplish while they’re on campus matters much more than the name of the college. Choosing the student’s preferred college, while also balancing financial considerations however, can present some challenges to a family. It is those very challenges that prompt me to share some important considerations that may assist you in making the final college decision.

It’s a very exciting time in the life of the high school senior when those college acceptance letters start rolling in! Excitement mounts and the process of deciding which college offer to accept begins. This decision cannot be made, however, without carefully taking into consideration the financial aspects of this endeavor. On the heels of the college admit letters come a number of merit scholarship offers and financial aid award letters. Now that we have all of this information in hand, we are tasked with figuring out which college is the best academic and social fit for our son, while also making sure it is a financial fit for our family. The number crunching has begun!
