There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges, including this week’s School Spotlight, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Imagine a hands-on, friendly, and innovative engineering school that’s completely dedicated to the undergraduate experience. With a student body totaling more than 2,000 (of which only 70 are grad students), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is a private, suburban college located approximately one hour west of Indianapolis that’s renowned for its strength in the STEM fields. Students can choose to study any of the school’s 23 high-tech majors, including unique options such as biomathematics, international computer science, and optical engineering. Although science, math, and engineering are undoubtedly Rose-Hulman’s strong suits, students have the luxury of being able to minor in areas as diverse as art, entrepreneurship, music, and psychology. Outside of the classroom, Rose-Hulman students can take advantage of DIII athletics, community service opportunities, Greek life, as well as a wide range of performing arts clubs. Current high school juniors who are curious about their future in the STEM field may want to check out the Rose-Hulman’s two-week summer program, “Operation Catapult.” Together with other highly motivated high schoolers, students will collaborate on engineering-themed projects while earning two elective credits should they choose to matriculate at Rose-Hulman. Fun fact: Approximately 98 percent of students are employed by graduation, with an average starting salary of approximately $73,084.
