School Spotlight: Wagner College

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school!

School Spotlight: Wagner College
Staten Island, NY

Urban campuses don’t have to be all concrete, sidewalks, and highrises. On the borough of Staten Island you’ll find a beautiful, park-like campus that’s home to Wagner College and its 1,750 undergraduates. This private, liberal arts college features strong programs in business, nursing, physician assistant (a five-year BS/MS track), and psychology, but the theatre department is one of the most popular. Theatre students receive intensive training, especially in the area of musical theatre, and with four main stage musical productions per year, there’s no shortage of performance opportunities. The 2016-17 season included Titanic, La Cage Aux Folles, Anything Goes, and Avenue Q. Another of Wagner’s strengths is its hands-on core curriculum. In addition to traditional writing, math, and science requirements, students must also complete Learning Communities and Reflective Tutorials, many of which include a fieldwork component. In the freshman Learning Community “Encountering Others in the Old World and New,” students visit NYC’s other boroughs to explore museums and immigrant neighborhoods. With Manhattan just a ferry ride away, fieldwork and internships are popular at Wagner; over 100 percent of students complete at least one practical learning experience before graduating.
