I became interested in the college admissions process after serving as a student tour guide in the admissions office of my alma mater. After graduating, I accepted an admissions counseling position at Bennington College in Vermont where I evaluated applications and reviewed art portfolios from students across the country. Three years later, after pursuing my master's degree in New York City, I joined the admissions staff at Barnard College where I served as a senior admissions officer. At Barnard, I directed Long Island and Boston recruitment in addition to managing the College's alumnae interview program, coordinating admissions statistics, and editing various college publications. Having also served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College and visited over 75 colleges, I feel especially well-equipped to help students prepare for admission interviews and campus tours.

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school! School Spotlight: University of San Diego San Diego, CA Relatively new on the higher education scene (they’ll be celebrating their 70th anniversary next year), the University of San Diego is a Catholic university enrolling 5,800 undergraduates. Over 50 percent of students hail from CA, yet all 50 states and 75 countries are represented, providing plenty of cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity. USD’s beautiful Spanish Renaissance-style campus provides a perfect backdrop for students interested in community service and experiencing the great outdoors. The University Ministry sponsors a wide range of both domestic and international volunteer opportunities (six service trips to Tijuana annually!), while Outdoor Adventures offers hugely popular trips and courses, including canyoneering, snorkeling, and backpacking in the Grand Canyon. The School of Business and its eight majors is a tremendous draw for undergraduates, with over 45 percent of students majoring in business or a related field (including finance, accounting, marketing, and real estate). The top 10 percent of each incoming class is invited to apply for the USD Honors Program, which gives highly motivated students the chance to live in an honors living-learning community and enroll in unique team-taught interdisciplinary courses. This spring, honors students can choose to study topics such as “The (Social) Capital of Social Media” with communication and marketing professors and “Bombs Away!” from a historical and physics perspectives.  Image Credit: Top, Courtesy of University of San Diego College-Visit-CTA
