I came to College Coach with close to 10 years of experience in college financial aid offices. I began my career at Boston University, where I counseled students and their parents on the financial aid process and reviewed undergraduate financial aid applications. At Tufts University, where I served as assistant director of financial aid, I developed expertise in the field of health professions financial aid. I was responsible for financial aid application review, grant awarding and loan processing, and college financing and debt management counseling for both pre- and post-doctoral dental students. I have also served as an active member of the Massachusetts Association of Student Financial Aid Administrator’s Early Awareness and Outreach Committee, coordinating early college awareness activities for middle school students; as a trainer for the Department of Education’s National Training for Counselors and Mentors, educating high school guidance counselors on the financial aid process; and as a volunteer for FAFSA Day Massachusetts, aiding students and parents with the completion of online financial aid applications.

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. And for some students, this includes schools beyond the U.S., too! As such, we are highlighting an international college this week in our School Spotlight series. School Spotlight: University of Oxford Oxford, England Would you describe yourself as self-motivated, positive, hard-working, enthusiastic, and curious? If all of these adjectives resonate with you, and you’re willing to venture outside the United States to attend one of the world’s top universities, considering adding the University of Oxford to your college list. Comprised of 36 independent colleges and 6 private halls, Oxford offers the best of both worlds: access to the resources of a world-class university and, thanks to the smaller colleges that house between 100-400 students each, a tight-knit and diverse community of scholars. The University enrolls 11,700 undergraduates and a nearly equal number of grad students. Among Oxford’s 48 majors you’ll find multiple interdisciplinary programs—such as Mathematics & Philosophy; History & English; and Philosophy, Politics & Economics—that are ideal for students with more than one academic focus. Like the University of Cambridge, Oxford also utilizes tutorials in the learning process. On a weekly basis, two or three students meet with their tutor to explore and discuss new ideas and to gain new perspectives. It’s no wonder that successful Oxford students are willing to think deeply and engage in a personalized learning experience! Fun fact: did you hear about the new NASA InSight Mission to Mars that launched in May 2018? A team of Oxford astrophysics are among those who helped implement the technology that will be used to measure seismic and tectonic activity on the red planet.
