There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school!
School Spotlight: St. Lawrence University
Thirty minutes from the Canadian border you’ll find St. Lawrence University, a private liberal arts university that embraces collaborative and experiential learning. The 2,400 students here are encouraged to apply classroom learning to hands-on summer research, internships, and off-campus study opportunities. Over 50 percent of students choose to study internationally in exotic locals such as Kenya, New Zealand, Thailand, although the University also offers popular domestic programs in the Adirondacks and Washington, D.C. Being so close to the Canadian border has its benefits! In addition to sponsoring DI men’s and women’s ice hockey, St. Lawrence features a combined Canadian studies major, which allows students to incorporate a humanities or social sciences major with Canadian-themed seminars, research projects, and internships. Other popular programs at St. Lawrence include economics, business in the liberal arts, psychology, and government. An amazing 44 percent of students even choose to complete a double, triple, or combined major! Fun fact: interested in earning your M.D. with a special focus on rural medicine? St. Lawrence offers a unique early assurance program with SUNY Upstate Medical University, which guarantees incoming freshman a spot in the medical school after completing their four-year degree at St. Lawrence. Preference is given to students from a rural setting who are committed to serving a rural community upon graduation.
