I became interested in the college admissions process after serving as a student tour guide in the admissions office of my alma mater. After graduating, I accepted an admissions counseling position at Bennington College in Vermont where I evaluated applications and reviewed art portfolios from students across the country. Three years later, after pursuing my master's degree in New York City, I joined the admissions staff at Barnard College where I served as a senior admissions officer. At Barnard, I directed Long Island and Boston recruitment in addition to managing the College's alumnae interview program, coordinating admissions statistics, and editing various college publications. Having also served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College and visited over 75 colleges, I feel especially well-equipped to help students prepare for admission interviews and campus tours.

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. And while the media tends to focus on just a handful of schools, we at College Coach encourage students to think outside the box during their college selection process and explore a wide range of colleges. As such, we are highlighting a new college each week in our School Spotlight series. Check out the college below, along with the other posts in our series, and you may just stumble upon your dream school! School Spotlight: Macalester College St Paul, MN When students say they’re looking for a small liberal arts college in an urban setting, I often respond, “Well, how about Macalester?” Located minutes from the fantastic cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis is the multicultural, rigorous, and service-oriented Macalester College. Home to over 2,100 students (all undergrads), Mac features dedicated professors and tremendous support for study abroad and internship programs. Areas of study range from classics to international studies, neuroscience to theatre, and the College offers over 800 courses each year, including Politics and Inequality, Gender and Sport, and Language and Music. Mac is serious about transforming students into globally-minded and ethical leaders, and thanks to the Civic Engagement Center, there are an abundance of programs to help students contribute to the greater good. With access to volunteer opportunities both on campus and off, as well as classes that combine academic coursework with community research, students here learn how to put their ideas into action. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why Mac students have received 46 Fulbright awards in the past 10 years! Good to know: admitted students will receive a financial aid package that meets 100 percent of the family’s demonstrated need.  Image Credit: Top, Courtesy Macalester College College-Visit-CTA
