I began my career as both a tour guide and senior interviewer at my alma mater, Barnard, where I later joined the admissions team and read and reviewed applications from students applying from the northeastern, midwestern, and western regions of the United States, as well as Canada. A few years later, while pursuing my master’s degree, I briefly left admissions to be the director of student life at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Realizing I missed working closely with students on the high school side of college counseling, I joined the admissions team at Fordham University where I recruited and reviewed applicants applying to Fordham’s liberal arts and business colleges. My most recent experience at Montclair State helped me understand what the application process looks like outside of highly selective colleges and how to help students who may not be fully prepared for college-level work. One of my favorite past experiences was managing the athletic recruitment process at Fordham as well as a number of sports at Barnard. Understanding the inner workings of both the Ivy and Patriot athletic leagues meant I was able to guide students to find the best athletic matches as part of their college search.

In last week’s episode of Getting In: a College Coach Conversation, Beth Heaton welcomed guests to talk about predictability in admission to the most selective colleges, the continuation of our Application Workshop series, and some of the wackiest scholarships up for grabs.  Ivy League Admissions  Karen Crowley, former admission officer at University of Pennsylvania and Boston University and current director of college counseling at a high school in Long Island, joined Beth to discuss how to honestly assess your performance to see how competitive you might be at an Ivy or similarly competitive institution. They shared why it can be so hard to give your own credentials an objective review without letting emotions cloud your perspective. Before they ended, they talked about what level of impact is expected from your activities and who to ask to write your letters of recommendation. School's Out! College Application Workshop      After the break, Beth continued the next segment of our summer-long series on completing your college applications. This week, Beth was joined by our colleagues Karen Spencer and Beth Feinberg Keenan to tackle the financial considerations of putting together your college list. In addition to handing out your next assignment, the three discussed some tools and websites to use to get good early predictions on the actual cost of a school for your family. Karen reiterated my favorite tip on which kinds of schools to add to your list if you want to maximize the scholarship dollars you hope to earn. Quirky Scholarships        And speaking of scholarships, in the last segment Beth was joined by Shannon Vasconcelos to share how to find that quirky unique scholarship that is perfect for you. The Flavor of the Month Scholarship made me hungry for ice cream, and Beth and Shannon’s confusion between the Humane Society scholarship vs the National Beef Society scholarship made me laugh out loud. Are you super tall? Super short? Shannon explained why small applicant pools might increase your odds.  If this segment left you wanting more quirky scholarship info, check out Shannon’s latest post on this very topic. Tune into Getting In: A College Coach Conversation Thursday to get your next assignment in our Application Workshop and to learn more about how debt impacts aid eligibility. Getting-In-CTA
